Guideline for decision making and management actions
Henri Fayol is claimed to be the father of modern management. He defined 14 basic management principles, which could be used in all management situations. However, his Administrative Management Theory is criticised on the following grounds; It does not give much attention to the problems; It gives importance only to the formal organisation structure; It gives importance to “commanding” and not “directing” the workers or issues like motivation, communication and leading.
Fayol argued that with his management principles employees should be allowed to express new ideas, but hierarchy, chain of command, centralization and concentration of decision making authority at the top management does not foster the creative process of generating, developing, and communicating new ideas.
What is your preferred organizational tendency? Fayol’s 14 principles of Management and their Antithesis serve as a guideline for decision making and management actions. What has changed in the last 100 years? What is the best way to conduct ourselves and organize Work 4.0? How black & white is it?
Fayol’s five principle roles of management are still actively practiced today and even so called agile development is not so far away from Fayol’s principles. Agile methods are not the same than agility in the organization. Agile methods are just for agile teams, but it’s not agility of the organizations.
On the contrary to establishing a strict hierarchy and delegating power to certain individuals over others, employees should practice co-active power so that each member feels more valued.
